True Faith and Prophetic History

Significance and Advantages

What is Iman (faith)?

Faith, generally, is a deep-rooted emotion which becomes the reason behind a person’s thoughts, words or actions. In Islam, the word Iman originates from the root a-m-n which means to be calm and quiet (in heart), to be protected from fear etc. And hence the definition of Islamic scholars for Iman is believing by heart with conviction (no doubt or fear indicates calmness) which leads to the acceptance and verification of it by tongue and the result to be (naturally) manifested in actions by limbs.

Therefore, Iman is the unavoidable ingredient to any heart and hence the action of the limbs. It, when fed the right way to the hearts, will definitely result in happiness and peace. And of course, it is the means of salvation in this world and the next. To add to it, the higher a person rises in the levels of Eemaan, the more he is entitled to taste and appreciate the sweetness of it, and his soul (true soul) derives satisfaction from it.

In a hadith reported by Imam Bukhari and Muslim, The Prophet () said, "Whoever possesses the following three qualities will taste the sweetness of faith: 1. The one to whom Allah and His Apostle become dearer than anything else. 2. Who loves a person and he loves him only for Allah's sake. And 3. Who hates to revert to disbelief (Atheism) after Allah has brought (saved) him out from it, as he hates to be thrown in fire."

What is Seerah?

In Arabic, the word 'seerah' comes from the root verb "saara, yaseeru": meaning "to travel” or “travel". A person's biography is called Seerah because when we study and read his biography, we are actually traveling or talking about his journey through life. Likewise, when we study the blessed life and times of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), we travel his journey, essentially following his footsteps. The Arabs used this term for the biography of any person in their community, but after the beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), prominent Muslim scholars and historians used it exclusively for the beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). For this reason, when the scholars say “Seerah” they mean the biography of the life and times of the best of men, the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) with ideal character.

Why Study Seerah?

There are many reasons to study Seerah, some of which are listed below:

Studying Seerah is a sign of love and it increases our love for Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), and it is the only way to cultivate our fragile love for the Prophet (ﷺ).

As we are commanded to love him, and it is one of the principles of faith, we must love him more than our parents, our children, all men, and our own selves. Narrated Anas (RA): The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

"None of you will have faith till he loves me more than his father, his children and all mankind." (Bukhari 15).

In fact, the weakness of our love for the Prophet (PBUH) is the result of our ignorance of his Seerah. If we make a habit of reading about his life and teachings, and start to imbibe the lessons from it, and consider bringing it to our lives, seeing and experiencing the miraculous results and the peace from it, there’s no chance that our hearts go without loving him.

Above all, it’s an obligation on us. Almighty Allah has instructed us to know our beloved prophet and prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). He says:“Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example for whoever has hope in Allah and the Last Day, and remembers Allah often.” (Al-Ahzab 33:21).

One of the main principles of this verse is to follow the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) in all his words and deeds. The obligation to study Seerah is clear from this verse. Therefore, the study of the life and times of Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) is the study of the exemplary model we should follow.

The study of Seerah helps us understand and comprehend the meaning of the Holy Book of Allah. This aids us in making the Quran a part of our daily life easier.

It basically teaches us about the verses, the situations, time and people who were the reasons of those revelations. Likewise, the Qur'an itself teaches the Seerah and helps us understand it. Thus, it helps to establish a two-way relationship - by studying Seerah, it makes us understand Quran and vice versa.

Studying the Seerah helps one strengthen his faith. It leads us to the understanding of the stories of the nations that have gone before us, in required details, along with relevant reflections.

They give an account of what happened and how the Prophets were rejected and persecuted. Learning such true stories from Seerah increases our faith and hopes and lifts our spirits and prepares us to face even the worst with best of Iman.

Almighty Allah has blessed the Prophet (ﷺ) with many miracles. The split of the moon and the talk of the tree are just few to name. But if we ponder deeply about the biography of the Prophet (ﷺ), there is no wonder that we can conclude the life of Prophet (ﷺ) itself was a miracle.

For example, his eloquence, inclusive speech, and giving support with fear (over the enemy) are signs of wonder and are part of His Seerah.

Ibn Hazm (may the mercy of Allah be upon him), a famous Andalusian scholar said, “If the Prophet ﷺ had not been given any miracle other than his life and times, it would have been sufficient to prove that he is a prophet of Allah.” (Al-Milal van Nihal 2/90)

Noorul Qur'an Academy's 'Eeman wa Seerah' course has been developed by integrating these two.
